Many business owners pass up perfectly good opportunities for social media advertising. This happens for two reasons: Lack of knowledge and lack of time. We understand — online advertising can be confusing to figure out, especially with the constant changes and updates to social media platforms. It takes time to discover which platforms will work for you and how much you should spend—but don’t let that stop you from reaching your audience as they make daily (or even more frequent) visits to their social media accounts.

Social ads allow your brand to be seen by your potential customers in their free moments. Studies show that people spend more than two hours per day on average on social media. Why not make your brand part of that scene? Learn a little more about social advertising platforms and how they can fit into your online marketing plan.

Social Media and Their Users

With millions of people owning smartphones and mobile devices, social media apps have risen in popularity for all age groups. Consider the people who have been using Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter since its inception. Based on the briefest of messages, Twitter is still in the top 20 social platforms, while Facebook has boomed as people use it to remain connected to geographically distant friends and family.  Many individuals have become entrenched in daily Facebook and Messenger usage. Facebook has the highest number of active users with over 2.8 billion. Needless to say, it has become an intrinsic part of the people’s lives worldwide.

Meanwhile, LinkedIn provides a platform for job searches and professional networking, serving a professional audience that skews older. While it is less of a juggernaut in terms of active users, it is still an important platform for job seekers, networkers and professionals looking to connect and share information—some of which may be relevant to your business.

In contrast, the newer, more watchable social platforms attract younger audiences. Those platforms include Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram. Each focuses largely on video or photo sharing, and the resulting visual content can be addictive.

Snapchat, a multimedia messaging platform, has been around for ten years, amassing 108 million U.S. users. More than half of Snapchat’s users are between 15 and 25 years old, most of whom are in the U.S. If your products and services skew to Millennials and Gen Z, you may want to consider incorporating Snapchat into your marketing and advertising plans.

Although an older platform, Instagram has proven its staying power with teens and Millennials as well as others who appreciate creative, entertaining visual posts. Curated Instagram feeds led by influencers have become popular social media stops with millions of followers. Instagram ranks in the top 5 social media platforms by a number of active users. It is a good place to feature consumer products and services and cultivate a following.

Founded in 2016 and based in China, the video platform TikTok has risen to 100 million monthly users in the U.S. in just five years. Half of their users are under 34 years old, and statistics show that they visit the platform multiple times per day to watch short videos. TikTok has become the latest viral video platform.
